63rd Anniversary Tour
Powering a modern Cuban salsa sound with the traditional roots of changüí

Elito Revé y su Charangón

Leading Cuban salsa band Elito Revé y su Charangón will appear in Japan as this year’s artist for the 17th Vivela Salsa Tour. The summer tour, organized by NPO Tiempo Iberoamericano since 2002, brings the top performers of Afro-Caribbean music to Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. Elito Revé has taken on the challenge of leading and updating the sound of his father’s legendary orchestra to secure its place at the forefront of Havana’s dance scene as the “Steamroller of Cuba.” He has drawn on the legacy of Elio Revé, who is revered for popularizing the changüí sound of Cuba’s Guantanamo region, and given it a fresher, crisper modern sound that flattens a clear path toward the dance floor for all.

The band was originally formed by Elio Revé in 1956. Using an unorthodox drum instrumentation for a dance band and powerful trombone hooks, Revé gained popularity with a maverick sound that was highly danceable while retaining a deep edge. The band has also served as an incubator for Cuba’s most talented musicians including piano giant Chucho Valdes, eccentric keyboardist Juan Carlos Alfonso and his Dan Den group, and the nucleus of Los Van Van—another band that has amazed crowds throughout Japan on a Vivela Salsa tour.

Along with a more contemporary flavor, Elito’s version of the band now has a sultry, playful and powerful accent in the form of female vocalist Susel Orieta, who adds another energetic dimension to the band’s evolved hyperdance sound.

In August, get ready to be rolled over by the tension and pressure of this top Cuban band that has been pounding audiences with high energy music for more than half a century.
